The Vegetarians of Love (1990) |
If you see her say hello
If she ask how I'm doing let her know
If she says is he O.K. say it's slow
But he's coming round
And if you sleep with her
Through the darkest night
And you wake beside her in the early light
Kiss her gently like I might
And bring her round
If she stumbles if she trips and slows
In the darkest rain and through the driving snow
Bring her straight here
I'll be on my own
But bring her round
And every dream and every shadow that you heard
Makes you want to cry
`Cause it's a big bad world
If you want her let her know
If she's leaving let her go
All off this will pass but it passes slow
And you'll come around
When the wind blows through October skies
And you wake up in the cold twilight
And you stretch you hand out and there's
nothing there but the night
And the darkness is all around
If you see her say hell
If she asks how I'm doing let her know
If she says is he O.K. say it's slow
But he's coming round
When the rain falls from the blackened sky
There's a heart breaking but it feels alright
See I should have done something but I let it slide
And I'll come around
Every dream and every shadow that you've heard
Don't it make you cry like you want to die
In this big bad world.
Love of Something
It was last night baby when I caught your eye
Sssh don't tell nobody but I almost died
And like a beach bunny sobbing on a shag pile rug
I thought of "Going to a Go-Go"
And the Family Stone frug
So we twist and shout then when it's feeling great
She drifts away
(Talk talk baby whaddya say)
She walk away
(Walk walk baby why don't you stay)
But like a cardboard suitcase in the pouring rain
She falls apart on me and then we start again
It must be love
Or something else
Well I talk with her and then I stay all night
We did everything but it
Still it felt alright
She was careful `bout her health so it didn't hurt
When she started dropping pills in her blue grass skirt
Then she twist and dip and do the flip-flop slide
She drifts away
(Talk talk baby whaddya say)
She walk away
(Walk walk baby why don't you stay)
Well trembling like an earthquake, slipping like soap
I don't believe with her I'll even give up hoping
This is love
Or something else
Still I never take for granted that what's new
Am l overstating what at root
Seems cute
And more to boot
The point is moot
But up to you
Is this love
Or something else
I don't believe in love baby if I'm honest with myself
I don't believe it lasts long it's kinda like your health
Hey everything is spinning round down the laundromat
And love is like your clothes it's only useful while it lasts
Save your soul
Dans ce monde il n'ya qu'une femme pour chaque homme
Et je pense qu'il n'ya qu'un age pour chaque age
Et ca c'est vraiment vrai
I don't mind if you go
I don't mind if you take it slow
I don't mind if you say yes or no
I don't mind at all
I don't care if you live or die
Couldn't care less if you laugh or cry
I don't mind if you crash or fly
I don't mind at all
I don't mind if you come or go
I don't mind if you say no
Couldn't care less baby let it flow
`Cause I don't care at all
Na na na etc.
I don't care if you sink or swim
Lock me out or let me in
Where I'm going or where I've been
I don't mind at all
I don't mind if the government falls
Implements more futile laws
I don't care if the nation stalls
And I don't care at all
I don't care if they tear down trees
I don't feel the hotter breeze
Sink in dust in dying seas
And I don't care at all
Na na na etc..
I don't mind if culture crumbles
I don't mind if religion stumbles
I can't hear the speakers mumble
And I don't mind at all
I don't care if the Third World fries
It's hotter there I'm not surprised
Baby I can watch whole nations die
And I don't care at all
I don't mind I don't mind I don't mind I don't mind
I don't mind I don't mind
I don't mind at all
Na na na etc..
I don't mind about people's fears
Authority no longer hears
Send a social engineer
And I don't mind at all
Thinking Voyager 2 Type Things
This is the moment that we come alive
I'm handing out the breath and the kiss
I'm electric with the snap and the crackle of creation
I'm mixing up the mud with the slit
So rise up Brendan Behan and like a drunken Lazarus
Let's traipse the high bronze of the evening sky
Like crack crazed kings.
Voyager 2 where are you now
Looking back at home and weeping
Cold and alone in the dark void
Winding down and bleeping
Ever dimmer ever thinner
Feebly cheeping in the solar winds
I'll turn you up
Sail on sail on sail on
On past the howling storms
Through electric orange skies
And blinding methane rain
Sail on
I'll turn you up.
Never bring me down to earth again
Let me blaze a trail of glory across the sky
Let me traipse across it's golden high
Let me marvel in wonder and unfettered gaze
At the bigness and implausibility of being
Yes stretch out your hands into infinity you human things
Past blind moons and ice cream worlds
You hurl your metal ball of dull intelligence
And show us all our fragile grip
As we too track with you
Slower but no less insistent
Like the only fertile seed
In the barren vault of being
Sail on
Hurtling towards the waiting tomb of empty worlds
Waiting for the final primary come of life
I'll turn you up
And I'm thinking big things
I'm thing about mortality
I'm thinking it's a cheap price that we pay for existance
This is the moment that we come alive
This is the breath and this is the kiss
Now we're in Paris
In the ball gowns
In the high hells
In the snow
And we're spinning round Versailles in Volkswagen Beetle
That we'd hired for the day
(At the cheap rate)
The room without the shower was cold again
"Are we already middle-aged", she said
And I said "I feel nothing
I feel like a jelly-fish".
"Maybe it's the Portuguese Men-O-Pause", she joked
And she laughed her brittle head
And we went back to bed
And I've been thinking about these things
I've been thinking about Voyager 2
And this is the moment that we come alive
Did they never tell you `bout baby
Did they never say it's tough
Are you never going to give up on that
Big romantic stuff
That French song playing on the radio at noon
The singer's name was Jean Michel and he's singing `bout la lune
And she shivers as she comes awake
And remembers how to think
And she shakes the hair out of her eyes
But the daylight makes her blink
And the song it whispers in her mind like a half forgotten sigh
Of times of love the longest days and youth and endless skies
And ooh la la
Did they never tell you `bout it baby
Did they never say it's tough
Are you never going to give up on that
Big romantic stuff
To ease the pain of it, to fill the empty void
She stores up ancient souvenirs like ravens with their hoards
It's not the getting old she minds it's the meaningless of being
She thinks about all this while Jean sings about la vie
And accordions and violins take her back in time
When the only explanation was kiss and love and life
Crucified Me
First time that I saw you
You were standing in the hall
You said you knew everything
But I knew you knew fuck all
There were tremors in your cheekbones
There was longing in your eyes
But I thought I smelt a nameless fear
Buried in your thighs
You crucified me
Do you see
That you crucify me
I crouched down in the hallway
You huddled on the step
There were shadows in the alcove
We were way out of our depth
There was thunder in the hallway
There was lightning at the gate
Electric storms flashed through the walls
In fixed and fluid states
And crucified me.
Do you see
That you crucify me
Now and then I call your name
And now and then it's clear
Baby you can call in vain
Even though you're near
You were cloaked in your depression
Like a widow in her veils
How could we begin to think
That we could ever fail
You crucify me
Do you see
That you crucify me
First time that I saw you
You were standing 'gainst the wall
You swore I knew everything
But you knew I knew fuck all.
Jungle Joe say to Uncle Sam
He say leave me alone
Let me be just as I am
Money grow on tree
As we say in Japanee
Down Amazonia way
up all night I've been out with the in crowd
Uptight, outtasight, alright outtamind
You know what I'm trying to say
But in another way
A chain that breaks is just a heart that's changed
Sometimes I fall on my knees an I pray
God won't let me see another day
Then I wake up and I thank God that He's
Ignored my prayer again
Systems of belief well they come and they go babe
The myths we believe in they change from day to day
I believe belief will wrap your brains in chains
So I'm for changing
Desperate deeds were done by men with guns in China
Boys in clean white shirts
Stopped the tanks in their dirt
And the blood they spilled
Just made the white shine brighter
They weren't waiting baby
They were breaking up the chains of pain
They're not slaves they're changing
By breaking up the chains of pain
A brain in chains is just a heart enslaved
Join the chain gang
Break it up
A Rose at Night
Here she comes like a Queen all through the wintertime
Skirts that billow long after she's gone
Yes I could smell her smell on the pillow late at night
She's a rose that blooms at night
And all the streets were wet and slicked with rain
Outside my green front door
Number 48 seemed dull by comparison
I went to the pub to stock up of the long night by myself
That's one way out of this cold and lonely world
Yes I'll be a rose that blooms tonight
The city's quiet
The rioters have all gone home now
The fire brigades' sirens have been locked up for the night
There's a blackout down on Brown Street
Where all the blues come home
And yes there's a rose that blooms at night
Now Jim he packed up all his bas and said
"it's time to get out of here"
But his wife and children they were crying out in the kitchen
Out in the back
Once a year he remembers that scene
But it seems so long ago now
He tries to remember more but he can't
You don't look back
Memories_they're like a rose that blooms at night
There's a clock that never strikes
In the Town Hall's towers of steel
There's a read that's never used
That's never kissed with the hiss of wheel
In your month is a rusted brace
That you flash in your junkyard smile
Shine on like a rose at night
I got home last night about 8
There was nothing on the T.V. as usual
Just the normal repeats and things
I had the City Prices edition of the Evening Standard
Which is not as good as the Late Night one
Mainly because it doesn't have the full cinema listings
To be more specific it doesn't have the Fulham ABC
Which is my local
So I walked over to Battersea Park
Down by the Sri Chimnoy Mile
Past the Peace Pagoda
It's good
You can have a personal religious experience
And get healthy at the same time
Which obviously is important for a busy man like me
Well another moment in life's great adventure
It's no small wonder
I hope you weren't offended by what happened last night
Is was the awkward hour
And I didn't know what to do
Whether to come on or just leave it
To be honest I wasn't that interested
And I didn't think you were wither
So I went back to my place
And you went back to yours
And I got into bed
And started reading a book
By a guy called Tobias Woolf
It's good it's short stories
Just before you sleep he'll take
you off to Burma_Mandalay
Places like that
I set the alarm clock ready for another day at work
Another day in life's great adventure
It's no small wonder
Walking Back To Happiness
Dark skies are falling down on my head tonight
But I looked up and I could clearly see that moon
For a second I thought I was somewhere
romantic like Mississippi
But I was walking down Chelsea Bayou
It takes you by surprise the places you find yourself in
One minute you're here
Next minute you're there
And then you're gone
If it wasn't for a well placed sense of direction
You could lose you head and simply carry on
Walking back to happiness
Like Helen Shapiro did
Me and Helen
Arm in arm
Foghorns boom the daylight gloom descends
Too soon on wintry afternoons
That frightened heart of youth is with me now
Still staring out from its upstairs room
And you can take any road your wish to walk on
You can swim to the furthest shore
Or you can be like Joan of Arc babe
And plug into the planets core
And go walking back to happiness
I feel happy already watch me smile
See me laughing
Later on see me cry
And as it gets colder and the night wears on a little bit
I cool down yes I cool my heels
I remember my father and me down on the East Pier
He's pointing at the ships saying they're leaving here
Where do they go?
Where do they go?
Eastward Ho
Eastward Ho
Yes I remember my father
Standing on the edge of the Pier
Pointing with his finger Eastward Ho
We were walking back to happiness
And here we go
My friend she's on fire
She's burning like a juniper tree
She don't know what to do
But I do
`Cause she do it to me
Let if go let it go
It's not nice to be like ice
It's much better if you feel like fire
Yes there's a bad moon coming up
And I can see it's on the cusp
Electric winds are shrieking up in the wires
But it's a warm evening out
If feels like New Orleans blue
On the spray from the African shore
Oh we could make it coast to coast
She said "ain't that the most"
But I could tell she'd heard it all before
Let it go let it go
Let it shine down on me
Is this a love affair or is this a crime
Is this religion without priests, prayers or pews
This is the view from the left-over shelf
This is the punchline and the joke's on you
I don't need her kissy lips
I don't need her armies or her pearls
I fell asleep and dreamed of far off lands
When I awoke I nearly married that girl
Let it go let it go
The End Of The World
Though it strikes you as seeming a little absurd
I'm here to announce the end of the world
It'll happened sometime between now and high noon
It doesn't give you much time as it's happening real soon
It'll start with a whimper it'll end with a bang
It'll leave a big hole where we could have sang
This is the end
The end of the world
For five thousand years
You must surely have heard
Nostradamus and Jesus and Buddah and me
We said it was coming Now just wait and see
So everyone outside look up at the sky
It's the last time you'll see it so wave it goodbye
You took it for granted you thought it was free
Say goodbye to the leaves the trees and the sea
There's nothing more useless than a car that won't start
But it's even more useless at the end of the world
